The air we breathe is electrically charged, which means it comprises of positive ions and negative ions. Don’t let their names fool you, however. Negative ions are naturally created by rain, wind, waterfalls, surf and sunlight. Positive ions are created as a result of the use of computers, televisions, tobacco and radio transmitters.
Natural and beautiful, Himalayan salt lamps emit negative ions which are important for good respiratory health and general wellbeing as they decontaminate the air we breathe. By releasing negative ions, salt lamps decrease indoor air toxins such as mould spores, dust and dust mites, smoke/smog and general odour from animals and humans. An increased amount of negative ions in the atmosphere may provide relief from sinus pain and congestion, seasonal allergies and hay fever, decrease the severity of asthma symptoms, and decrease susceptibility to colds and flu by boosting the immune and respiratory system.
Not all salt lamps are suitable for air purification. A smooth, artificially shaped salt lamp will give off fewer ions than a unshaped Himalayan salt lamp which retains is naturally occurring rough surface because the larger the surface area of salt and overall salt mass the more ions will be emitted. Another thing to be mindful of is that some salt lamps are made of “rock salt” or “pharmaceutical grade salt” – this does not provide the same benefits that Himalayan salt does.
